Hi Steve, Hi Steve, How are you? I’m fine thanks!

Good Good.

I’ve got a question for you –

Could you tell me the sort of steps of being a strategic business partnering – what they are but I’m interested to know a little bit more about the steps.

Okay, I think that’s a great question

You know a lot of people look at business partnering and it’s almost like we’re looking at random pieces of a jigsaw and then they try and make sense of it.

I’ve developed a model where there are six stages which actually defines how to do it on a best practice basis. So I’ll just go through those stages fairly quickly.

6-Stage Business Partnering

1. The first stage is to prepare. So if you don’t prepare what you’re doing then you’ve got issues so you need to understand what your skill sets are, where you might need some training so on and so forth.

2. After preparation, I think the next thing you need to then look at is how you going to be accepted, so I’ve seen some very good technical business partners who don’t get accepted by the business because of the skill sets they have got so they’re quite technical but they can’t relate to dealing with people so so acceptance is quite an important part.

3. The next stage I would say is then probably I would say in terms of delivery, so how they deliver things are quite important so a business partner is not there as somebody who doesn’t create value.

The delivery process is where they have to look at the business outcomes and team outcomes and how to help the teams to deliver what they need to do so focusing on delivery is is quite an important aspect to that.

4. The other feature then is a good business partner will then understand Change. So I’ve not been in any business over 30-40 years which is not changing.

Some of it is planned in that the taking things forward and sometimes it might be things which people have interact to so we live in a volatile world it’s uncertain, it’s chaotic and ambiguous and all business models have been ripped up today.

So the skills sets of a business partner understand that stage that that’s what they need to do its quite key, but if you’re not being accepted by the teams then there are disadvantages that’s what the acceptance stage is quite important.

5. I think the next stage is then to work through delivery. Its one thing to understand change but how do you deliver that the outcomes that you need to come through and I’ve come to outcomes in a moment so the delivery process of a business part is quite important so that might be project management skills it might be six sigma skills.

6. It might be just people skills with different changes and it might be also the technical skills from the professionalism which needs to be applied the last stage for me Steve would then be outcomes because if you deliver something which doesn’t work then that’s obviously a bad delivery so the outcomes might be more organization on team basis rather than individuals I think that’s quite an important aspect of a business partner.

So I think there are you know sort of key stages to it. each of those stage can be brought down into more detail. Thats what a good business partner would understand of actually the stages they would have to go through.

That’s interesting Steve, because I did have a quick look at your book before I came – all right – and I thought that was really great – so thanks for that. and I thought there was a stage called Engagement, just before acceptance.

Ohh yeah yeah – sorry about that yeah there is a process of engagement. Thanks for that Steve, I forgot about that. I should have know better.

Engagement is actually it’s beyond acceptance actually getting integrated in the team so acceptance is like one level, engagement that means working with the teams you’re working with the organisations that they’re actually working with and actually understanding how the organization work.

A good business partner will able to move throughout the organization and actually engage with different levels be HR, Finance, Procurement, Marketing, The CEO, Someone in the shop floor. A good business partner would have great skills of engaging with different stakeholders. Well thanks for that good question.

Yes from my understanding it’s really

Preparation, yeah, it’s engagement, yep, once you’ve worked with the teams you then hopefully will get accepted but so you recognized and if you’ve got just got technical skills that could be better – yeah – yeah – then it’s about delivery , delivering the organisation’s outcomes – yeah – or maybe on a operational level helping them with their commercial side, things like that and then moving to change where they want the organisation’s change to aid them with that change to help deliver those outcomes and then it’s about realizing those outcomes is that paraphrasing my understanding?

Yeah that’s fantastic, you know if I was CEO , I’d be hiring you right now.
